if i were not leaving for a cruise in two days, (and but for that little thing called work) i would be trying to convince myself to spontaenously drive down to palm springs to join in this.

the winter of the dance is a film two guys made with a tiny camera during the long winter of canada. they danced outside on street corners in the snow. just because.

call it crazy. wierd. people with too much time.

maybe.

or maybe it's inspired. the idea of movement and celebration in unlikely places. just because.

i danced my heart out this summer. between the afternoon hours of 1 and 2 30 in a room made of wood with sunlight and breeze through the windows. if people unrelated to our music ed program came through the doors, they would call us insane for sure. we ran and leaped and twisted and touched and lay and spun and reached. we opened up and found such freedom in the energy of our teacher. i lost my inhibitions in that safe space.

i came back to la determined to keep dancing. right now it's a more formal practice. modern dance class at a local studio. it's small and a good place to explore technique and french vocabulary. and so i'm learning about the form of dance. muscles and turnout and hip placement. today we worked on the swing for over an hour.

but it's good to remember dance in it's freedom too. i'm inspired by the winter dancers. and tonight i will go to lindy groove and use the few swing steps i know to celebrate in my own way.
