i'm here in geneva, blogging from the hostel. funny all the prompts are in... swiss? switzer? goodness how embarrassing. whatever the swiss speak.
had a very nice flight actually, bulk head row, two meals, three movies, and only 8 hours. the train transfer was easy, what a beautiful ride. switzerland is what i imagined, with more rolling plains. the houses all have colored wooden shutters with flowers in the window boxes and i can imagine how breathtaking it is during winter.
i nodded off for a sec on the train and woke up to a stunning view of lake geneva (which is HUGE) and mont blonc (which is even more HUGE) one look at those mountains and i have an internal conversation with myself about how crazy i am to be hiking 100 miles this week.
one step at a time.
i'll be glad to meet the tour group tommorow. traveling in foreign places alone is a good challenge for me, put i prefer not to do it for long. it's a hot hot day and the swiss women are inspiring me to wear whatever i want. the women wear dresses while riding motorcyles. so many bikes and scooters here, the beach was lined with them three thick. people everywhere, mostly sitting or walking. cafes line the lake, and the strangest thing occured to me... people, families, couples, groups of older men sit with a half finished glass for hours. no food. just company. just sitting. conversation. rest. this day has felt immensely long to me, and i'm proud i managed to stay awake. in the midst of that, i can feel parts of me really slowing down. it took me over an hour to eat my sandwich in the evening breeze. i eavesdropped on this conversation between a group of 5 or 6 men in their 70's maybe. all in spanish. lots of spanish actually. and french. and german. and korean. and some kinds of african dialects, not south african. and thai. i ate turkish food for dinner. i wonder if all of europe is really becoming so global culturally.
the buildings are tall and old and classy. the hostel is clean and comfortable. thank god for a private room. i'm on my way to a much needed shower and sleep.
love to all.

from the orthodox christian liturgy:
"Be mindful, O Lord, of those who travel by land, by sea, and by air; of the old and young, the sick, the suffering, the sorrowing, the afflicted, the captives, the needy and the poor; and upon them all send forth Thy mercies, for Thou art the Giver of all good things."
